After a pandemic hiatus, the UC Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive announced the return of their annual fundraising gala and looked to us to provide a visual identity for the event. The gala is an opportunity to strengthen the BAMPFA community and highlight both the museum’s art and film capacities. Our branding focused on bringing back some of the experimental and avant garde edge of the BAMPFA from years past.

The BAMPFA team asked us to provide a design solution that could be serialized throughout the years and work well with the current museum branding. We created a logo that bridges past and future, a marriage of serif and sans serif type that is modern, yet timeless. Our custom typeface expresses dynamism with unexpected cutout treatments and a bold, angled presentation.

Understanding BAMPFA’s audience, we designed the invitation suite to spark joy and intrigue from first glance. Custom, die-cut stickers that mimic BAMPFA’s architecture wrap around the front, and the envelope opens up to reveal an unexpected and vibrant color palette. The bright pops of color across warm and cool spectrums capture the museum’s ability to unite juxtaposing elements.
