We expanded our photography and video capabilities this year (with more surprises to come in 2018)! We provided drone video high above Oakland, comedy for internal corporate use, and for @johnmastersorganics, we art directed and produced both product and model photography that kicked off their brand summit in Tokyo and refreshed their web presence. 2017 held its fair share of dark moments, but bright spots included seeing the community come together for important causes, like raising funds for those devastated by the North Bay fires. CDA donated our time and talent to create the @chefsgiving brand identity and visual assets which spread the word of 100 Bay Area restaurants participating in a weeklong fundraiser and gala that raised $750,000 for fire relief. - Enjoy these studio highlights from 2017! “In the relentless negativity that reigns in the 2017 political landscape, my son continues to be a bright spot of innocence, joy, and wonder. I wanted to capture his sweet spirit and our special bond.” —Kelly Wahlstrom, CDA designer - #GratitudeGivesRiseTo joy.

“I was inspired by Mary Oliver’s poem, The Summer Day. It’s a twist on the adage, ‘stop and smell the roses’ that ends with a challenge.”—Keely Reyes - #GratitudeGivesRiseTo action.

Recovery after the Napa, Sonoma, and Mendocino fires is a long-term effort, but it's been heartening to see communities near and far come together to help. We donated our time to design the brand identity and assets for @chefsgiving, a weeklong fundraiser with more than 100 restaurants in the Bay Area committing to raising $1 million for fire relief. Check out their page for more info on how you can support!

It's all about the thoughtful details at @wydownhotel. Check out the full case study of our work with Wydown Hotel on our website—the link is in our profile!

A team outing to @oakland_cm featuring Yoshie Akiba was the perfect way to end the week. We learned about founder Yoshie's personal history, as well as how Bay Area institution @yoshis_oak came to be. Our studio was fortunate to do re-branding work for Yoshi's Oakland, while also branding the San Francisco location back when it was first opening. We fused the cut-paper aesthetic of a classic jazz album cover with Japanese symbology and textiles to create a sophisticated, unique visual toolbox. - #chendesignvault, 2007

We're currently looking for a graphic designer, senior web designer, and studio coordinator to join our growing team. Check out the positions on our website and get in touch at info@chendesign.com.

We're excited to begin a new series where we'll be digging up projects from CDA's storied past and sharing them here, which we're calling #chendesignvault. Why the word vault? We'll get to that soon, but first we want to share our work for @juniperridge. CDA re-imagined the Juniper Ridge brand and packaging for its line of wild fragrance products, printed collateral and retail website. We helped them tell their distinct story authentically and simply to resonate with their savvy clientele and express a mutual love of the outdoors. - #chendesignvault, 2012

Turns out you don't need special glasses to watch the #solareclipse when the forecast is cloudy with an extra side of fog, but they do make for a great team photo op!

Peace: 100 Ideas emerged out of a desire to be responsible with the messages delivered through the medium of design. We are revisiting its pages in the midst of turmoil in our current political climate. We hope these ideas help examine how we act on behalf of peace in our own lives, and where there is room for improvement. - #chendesignvault, 2004

Emigre is a digital foundry started in 1984 in Berkeley, and our Interactive Director @bconery accumulated quite the collection and brought books into the office to share with us. The formats of the books changed numerous times over its 69 issues, with the last six ending as small paperback books. Check out our Story for more typeface inspiration!

The Laurel Inn is a boutique hotel in the charming Pacific Heights neighborhood in SF with strong mid-century modern sensibilities. We had the opportunity to build a new brand identity system, which included exploring and creating custom typography for the logo. Read through our lead designer's thoughts behind the concept below and swipe left to see more photos! - "I wanted to create something quiet and refined, elegant and practical. Instead of scrapping the previous mark concept (a laurel), I thought it would be nice to simplify the icon to something more symbolic, less illustrative. In contrast to the organic mark, the letters are angular (referring to the exterior) and funky — the contrast of the letters flares in a way that alludes to common shapes in mid-century culture."—@yehoshuawhite #chendesign

Can't beat the view from today's office.

We recently finished a collaboration with the passionate folks at @ashateahouse. This is a selection of icons designed to help differentiate tea types across packaging and signage—swipe left to see which icon stands for which tea. #ChenDesign

Want an in-depth look at one of our designer's creative process? @kimberlylow is currently crafting a cover for our client @samuelmerrittu’s Report to the Community—she started with a digital mockup and is now building the cover in paper by hand using a xacto knife, bookbinding glue, and tape. The theme for this year's report is the “dimensionality of who we serve and the human interactivity of community, teaching, technology,” so Kim chose paper as a medium to convey dimensionality, depth, and texture in a way that a flat illustration can't. Stay tuned to see the final cover and product of Kim's hard work! #ChenDesign

@stephencurry30 calls out his #chendesign fans on @warriors parade day! 🎉🎉🎉 "Club level" viewing + double decker bus = perfect eye contact. #gowarriors

We had a blast at #AuctionNapa last weekend. Highlights included frenzied bidding for out-of-this-world lot offerings from our clients @freemarkabbey, @cliffamily, and other top Napa wineries, and a surreal evening at Raymond Vineyards hosted by the legendary Jean-Charles Boisset. It was our honor to brand this year's auction and work with the team at @napavintners and @inglenook1879—$15.7M was raised for local charities! Photography by @briana_marie.
